His arrival was filled with an unmistakable sense of irony. But it also underscored the geopolitical realities Trump has had to confront as President -- and the relief here that he has yet to enact many of the toughest measures he pledged at nearly every campaign trail rally. "We can't continue to allow China to rape our country and that's what they're doing. It's the greatest theft in the history of the world," he said at a May 2016 rally. But Trump hasn't imposed double-digit tariffs on Chinese imports. He seems to have entirely abandoned his plans to label China a currency manipulator. And he hasn't retaliated against Beijing's abusive trade practices with draconian measures of his own, as his campaign once foreboded. Instead, Trump's administration is leaning much more heavily on dialogue with Chinese officials -- notably direct talks with his counterpart, President Xi Jinping -- than other more dramatic powers afforded to him by the presidency. But first let me tell you about my city. I live in Columbus Ohio where we have tons of local breweries, restaurants and small businesses. Our downtown scene continues to evolve. We have various sports teams which we passionately support including one rather large program that you may have heard of. O-H...I-O! We have so many things to be proud of. The abundance of trash is not one of them. This leads me to an idea and potential solution. There are around 800,000 people in Columbus alone. Imagine if we all picked up just one single piece of trash. With April being Earth month, my idea is to start a campaign right here in our backyard. Here's how it works, when passing by a piece of litter, take a moment to pick it up, then post a picture of you disposing of the waste with the hash tag #TrashTag. During his recent trip to China towards the end of last year, US President Barack Obama made a point of praising free and uncensored internet access during a town hall-style meeting with students. And while the western press often delight in referring to China's censorship, the issue may now be more than just a debate over free speech. In today's BON feature, we hear from one Chinese analyst who fears that China's continued media restrictions could test already strained TRADE relations between China and the US. It's not the best start to the day to wake up one day and find that your favorite websites are no longer accessible. Unfortunately, that's what Chinese internet users have to face amidst the governments recent crackdown on what's deemed illegal material. At least 700 websites have been shut down or blocked in recent weeks. That's already on top of tens of thousands of foreign online services that have at times been inaccessible, including Youtube, Facebook, the BBC, Google and most recently, IMDB, a movie information site.
